Oh lonesome heart, lonesome heart Why are you weary and blue? I’m far from home, there’s an ache in my bones And it seems I’ve been forgotten ‘bout too Oh troubled mind, troubled mind Saddled with with worries and fears I had music and sway and fine wine everyday Now I drink from a cup filled with tears Oh lonesome heart, hear the song That’s sung in the dead of the night It’s a melody true that’s both hopeful and blue And it might just see me all right I’ll keep travelling still from river to hill Deep calls to deep in my soul But your waves and your breakers are my lonesome heart shakers Wash over me and I am whole If you wash over me, I am whole

about

Back in 2012, I was invited to join an online songwriting collective called Tunesmiths in a move that would stretch me musically and stylistically. The premise behind Tunesmiths is that, roughly on a monthly basis, each member should write and record a piece on a different but predetermined theme or genre. For example, one month the challenge could be to write a waltz, the next to write a TV theme tune and so on.

In 2014, I released the first volume of songs generated by the Tunesmiths challenges and, a year and a bit down the line, a second batch of disparate tunes are ready for consumption.

As with Volume 1, contained within this release are 13 markedly different compositions which have stretched my own musical boundaries and sensibilities as well as providing the opportunity to experiment with sound, style and recording techniques.

A variety of different styles make an appearance here with country, blues and Indian music sitting next to experimental, dance and minimalist pieces.

Many instruments were used for the recordings including ones like drums, accordion and bass which took me out of my comfort zone whilst quirkier instruments like the Monotron make an appearance as well as things that aren't really instruments at all. Cutlery and colouring pens, for example.

Hoping you enjoy these pieces as much as I enjoyed making them and remember to also download Volume 1 if you haven't done so already!
