about

A piece reflecting a chosen part of the day. Focusing in on the wee small hours of the morning during a bout of sleeplessness, this composition is split into six distinct sections. Starting with a crashing cymbal to signify the suddenness of waking up unintentionally, the first phrase reflects the quiet hope of getting back to sleep quickly before the brain starts thinking about things that must be done the next day.

This then leads into period where dark thoughts and confusion dominate before they fade away and peace of mind is temporarily restored. Soon enough, a catchy phrase (or thought) hooks itself in the mind further preventing the chance of any more sleep. Before long, the dawn chorus (recorded around 5am specifically for the piece during a period of insomnia) signals the start of the new day and the need to get up despite a shocker of a night.

Built up mainly using a MIDI keyboard, various aspects were added including the whispered "things to do tomorrow" phrase as well borrowed elements such as the melody of "The Demetrius Files" (featured on the first Tunesmiths album) and some static from a track that featured on my experimental soundscape album 'Out Of My System'.
