Back in 2012, I was invited to join an online songwriting collective called Tunesmiths in a move that would stretch me musically and stylistically. The premise behind Tunesmiths is that, roughly on a monthly basis, each member should write and record a piece on a different but predetermined theme or genre. For example, one month the challenge could be to write a waltz, the next to write a TV theme tune and so on.

In 2014, I released the first volume of songs generated by the Tunesmiths challenges followed by a second installment in 2016. A year and a bit down the line, a third batch of disparate tunes are ready for consumption.

As with Volumes 1 and 2, contained within this release are 13 markedly different compositions which have stretched my own musical boundaries and sensibilities as well as providing the opportunity to experiment with sound, style and recording techniques.

A variety of different styles make an appearance here with traditional reworkings, reggae and blues pieces sitting next to musique concrete, experimental and cod classical items.

As with the previous volumes, many instruments were used for the recordings including banjo ukes, dobros and Hammond organs sitting next to items that aren't actually real instruments such as washing machine, smart phones and a chest of drawers. The odd kazoo and glockenspiel are thrown in for good measure too.
